The Summer of Freedom: Operation D*V*D

Throughout this Summer of Freedom, we're asking to enlist your help as we bring back Operation D*V*D.  Every week during Chuck and Leanne's Hometown Handshakes, we're asking you to bring a new or gently used DVD to send to our troops overseas.  Late in 2007, we began Operation D*V*D and were surpised at your outpouring of support, now, we're asking for it again.

What is Operation D*V*D?
Operation DVD
is an appeal to patriotic Americans to donate their new and used DVDs which are then shipped to our fighting men and women overseas.

How are the troops going to watch these DVDs?
Most bases have a reinforced recreation room equipped with a Television and DVD player. Similar facilities exist on ships. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines (with portable DVD players) will also be able to check DVDs out like a library book (and then return them for another). The project is to ultimately have 200-250 titles in rotation at each base.

What kind of movies do we want?
All types of films — motivational, inspirational and especially films that inspire a sense of family and moral values. Comedies are the most requested.

“Children Titles” donated will be distributed to Servicemen’s families (Stateside) through the Family Readiness Group(s) of the National Guard.

Do the soldiers really have the time to watch movies?
When not on duty, there is not much to do (even baseball and softball games are no longer possible because of snipers, mines, bombs and other terrorist activities). Watching DVDs provides a safe wonderful diversion and good memories of home.

Where does my DVD go when I drop it in one of your "Collection Boxes"?
DVDs are forwarded to "Sorting Centers" and then sent to the Troops.

What happens when all of the movies at a base are watched?
At least 250 films will be in rotation at each base in Iraq and Afghanistan. With a constant rotation of soldiers and new films being donated, it will be almost impossible to run out of films.

How did Operation DVD begin?
Supply Sergeant Darrel Bruner in Baghdad was home on leave. Sgt. Bruner told his Pastor he needed to some paperback books and a few DVDs to take back with him (as there is no entertainment or places to buy things).

The rest is history.
