"Cops on Top" for Special Olympics!

Deputies with the Guilford Co. Sheriff's Dept. are perched high atop the Friendly Center Chick Fil-A until this Saturday, May 19th, to raise money for NC Special Olympics. "Cops on Top" is an annual partnership with Chick Fil-A in which off-duty Sheriff's deputies prowl the restaurant's roof with a PA system, play music and ask for donations. Volunteers and Special Olympics athletes work donation buckets in the drive-thru line. The dancing Chick Fil-A Cow will be on hand; drive-thru customers who get out and dance with the cow will win a free sandwich! Games & face-painting for the kids, Torch Run t-shirts on sale, and child ID fingerprinting on Saturday.

Stop by Chick Fil-A at Friendly Center (611 Pembroke Rd. in Greensboro):

Thursday 5/17 - 7am 'til 4pm
Friday 5/18 - 8am - 4pm
Saturday 5/19 - 8am - 2pm

Why I Walk to End Alzheimer's

Mama & me at 4.

My mother, Lee. Her sister Phyllis. Their aunts, Leslie and Shirley. All vibrant, intelligent, funny, extraordinary women who lost their lives in the madness that is Alzheimer's Disease. They are the reason I am walking to end Alzheimer's for the sixth year. I'd like to invite YOU to join me this Saturday, May 12th, at Center City Park in downtown Greensboro.

I'm walking to help reclaim the future for millions. By participating in the 2012 Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, I'm committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer research, care and support.

Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.

I need your support to do my part! Please make a donation - or join my team - to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer's. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.

Thank you for joining our movement! The end of Alzheimer's disease starts here.

Click here to join my team, make a donation or learn more about Alzheimer's and dementia.

Thank you and God bless!
Leanne and Lee (11/10/1924 - 2/15/2008)

Jake Owen: Busted...then married?!?

It was an eventful weekend for Jake Owen, who topped things off Monday morning at sunrise with an intimate hometown wedding to Lacey Buchanan in Vero Beach, Florida. Jake posted a photo on Facebook and wrote, "A best friend for life, I now have a wifey. My face hurts from smiling. What a wonderful way to start the rest of my life."

According to People, the couple was joined by family for the ceremony. Jake's brother Jarrod and Lacey's sister Leah stood up with them. The event was followed by a champagne brunch at the Vero Beach Hotel and Spa.

Vero Beach police detained Jake on Saturday night for an unspecified reason for what he called "an immature decision."

Gary Sinise & Lt. Dan Band support a local hero...you can too!
Race fans will be able to pick up some pretty impressive racing memorabilia while helping build a home for an American hero Saturday night, March 31, at Martinsville High School.

Actor Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band will play a concert as part of a fund-raiser for the construction of a specially-equipped smart house for Cpl. J.B. Kerns, who lost both legs and an arm in an explosion in Afghanistan a year ago.

Before and during the show, concert-goers will be able to bid on an amazing array of racing items, including the autographed rear bumper from Tony Stewart’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 winning car last fall and an autographed driver’s uniform worn by Rusty Wallace during his Last Call Tour in 2004. There will also be some non-racing items, including a script from CSI: NY, signed by Sinise, the show’s star. All of the money raised from the auction will go to the house-building efforts for Kerns.

To be eligible to bid on any items, you must have a ticket to the Lt. Dan Band Concert.

Sinise also will serve as Grand Marshal for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 on April 1 while Kerns will be the honorary starter.

Autographed silent-auction items include: Darrell Waltrip chrome helmet; Rusty Wallace driver uniform from his final career win at Martinsville Speedway in 2004; rear bumper from the car Tony Stewart drove to victory at Martinsville Speedway last fall; rear bumper from Ryan Newman’s car; Kyle Busch helmet visor, Jeff Burton racing shoes, Richard Petty diecast car; Richard Petty crew shirt; crew outfit from Kevin Harvick’s GM Goodwrench team; GM Goodwrench hat from Kevin Harvick; a Kevin Harvick autographed diecast car; the hood from the Fastenal Tunnel to Towers car driven by David Gilliland at Richmond last year, autographed by Gary Sinise and J.B. Kerns, script from CSI: NY autographed by Sinise.

Other auction items include four suite tickets to the Good Sam Club 500 at Talladega and pace car rides and the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Daytona International Speedway.

Tickets to the concert are $25 and may be purchased online at www.piedmontarts.org or by calling 276.632.3221.

Trayvon Martin shooter: no bruises?
altText
Admitted Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman's attorney has said that Zimmerman's nose was broken and he suffered a gash in the back of his head as a result of his scuffle to Martin, prior to the deadly shooting. Yet in a surveillance video shot after the shooting, Zimmerman's nose doesn't appear broken, nor is there any sign of blood on his head and face, a lawyer for the Martin family says.
The surveillance video shows Zimmerman in handcuffs, being frisked and led down a series of hallways. He was later released and not charged in the shooting, which has generated public outrage across the country.
